Chapter 1 Study Guide Flashcards
Introduction to Biology
What is the difference between qualitive and quantitative observations? Give an example of each.
Quantative: There are 14 windows and 30 chairs (involve measurements & numbers)
Qualitative: The chairs in this room are blue ( do not involve measurements & numbers)
What is an inference?
conclusions made from observations that try to explain those observations
What is a scientific method?
series of steps
What are the six steps of scientific method?
observations, questions, hypothesis, experiments, data, conclusions
What is a hypothesis?
explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for extra explanation
What is the difference between a control and an experimental group?
control: standard group for comparison
experimental: test if all conditions are kept the same except the variable
Why is control group important in an experiment?
They do not get exposed to the experiment/organization
What is an independent variable?
factor that can be adjusted by the experimenter, stands on its own
What is a dependent variable?
depends on independent factor, may change based on other variables
