Chapter 1 Slides Flashcards
Cognition - A working definition:
The study of MENTAL REPRESENTATIONS and processes involved in the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge can be:
Explicit or implicit
Semantic memory:
common knowledge of the world, concepts
Describe explicit knowledge:
Declarative memory, semantic memory, episodic memory
Define Episodic memory:
Autobiographical, personal experience, own view (including FALSE memories)
Implicit knowledge (3 points):
- Procedural-type memory: rules, mechanisms, perceptual knowledge/processes, grammar, etc.
- Mostly, unlearned (by hypothesis, innate)
- If learned, automatic (well practiced)
implicit knowledge is mostly __
unlearned
implicit knowledge is by hypothesis __
innate
implicit knowledge if learned is __
automatic
Mental representations and processes are __
“intelligent” activities, whether they are “conscious” or not
There are __ types of “intelligent” activity (cognitive processes);
-Those determined by EXPLICIT knowledge
-Those that rely on IMPLICIT knowledge
Knowledge-based behaviour and processes are driven by:
Explicit goals
Explicit knowledge (semantic/episodic)
Intentions
In knowledge-based behaviour/processes:
Processes are __ and they are subject to __
Processes are CONSCIOUS
They are subject to INTROSPECTION
Knowledge-based Behaviour/processes: Behaviour is determined by:
Intentions
Rule-governed behaviour/ processes are:
-Covert processes
-Processes that rely on implicit knowledge
