Chapter 1 Section 1 Flashcards
An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world. It is a way of knowing, a way of thinking, and a way of gathering
Science
What are scientific ideas open to?
Testing, discussing, and revision
Generally speaking, what is science?
Science is a process
The view that the physical universe, and all interactions among those objects, are governed by universal natural laws
The scientific way of viewing
What does science say about all the objects in the universe?
That all objects are governed by natural laws. (Ex. Gravitational law)
What is the main goal of science?
To provide explanations for events in the natural world
What does scientific knowledge do for us?
It cures diseases, places satellites, and send instantaneous electronic communications.
Involves observing and asking questions, making inferences and forming hypotheses, conducting controlled experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions
The Scientific Method
The act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way.
Observation
A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know
Inference
A scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested in ways that support or reject it
Hypothesis
After making a hypothesis, you test to see if it is true with multiple variables. Only one variable should change and all the others are controlled
A controlled experiment
Why is it important to be able to control variables in a controlled experiment?
It’s important because if many variables change, scientists won’t know which one led to the result of the controlled experiment.
The variable that is deliberately changed. What you control
Independent variable
The variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable. The result
Dependent variable
