Chapter 1: Scientific Study Of Life Flashcards
Qualitative
Use 5 senses to observe
How many groups are in experiments? Name them.
2
–Control group- Does Not receive the treatment
–Experimental Group- receives the treatment that’s being tested
Independent Variable
Manipulated Variable changed on purpose…
May cause dependent variable to change
Inferences
Act of reasoning from factual knowledge or evidence
Observations
Act of reasoning of noticing or perceiving
Experiments MUST use 3 things, name them.
1) large # of subjects
2) be repeated several times
3) be independently reproducible
Applied Biology
Actually use
1) medicine
2) plant breeding
3) crop science
How many scientific methods are there? Name them..
7
1) State Probability- What are u trying to find out?
2) Make Observations- Examine using 5 senses.
3) Gather Info- Find out ALL the info you can.
4) Hypothesis- What do you think will happen? “Educated guess”.
5) Experiment- Test the hypothesis, using experiment.
6) Record & Analyze- Look at info you gathered from the experiment.
7) Reach Conclusion- Did the data support the hypothesis.
Organism
Living individual that makes up a cell
Ouantitative
Using numbers to observe
Biology
Scientific study of life
Theoretical Biology
Really can’t prove
– environmental biology
–animal behavior
Dependent Variable
Variable that CANNOT be changed unless the independent variable changes it
What is Science?
Process used to solve problems & understand natural events..
–involves scientific method–
DRY
MIX
D- dependent variable
R-Responding Variable
Y-Axis
M- Manipulate variable
I-Independent variable
X- Axis
Control Process
Enables organisms to carry out metabolic reactions
Coordination
Enzymes coordinate to metabolic reactions
Regulation
Enzymes are regulated in order to maintain homeostasis
Responsive Processes
Organisms react to changes in their environment
Metabolic Processes
Organisms gain & store energy in the chemical bonds in the nutrients they take in
Theory
An explanation for a natural phenomenon
Generative Processes
Organisms grow by increasing the # of cells organisms reproduce either sexually or asexually
What are the levels of Biological Organization?
Smallest to largest
- Atom- All living things composed of
- Molecules- Specific arrangements of atoms
- *Cell- simpliest unit shows characteristics of life (life starts)
- *Tissue- Many CELLS that perform a particular function
- *Organ- Many TISSUES that perform a particular function
- *Organ System- Many ORGANS that perform a particular function
