Cells Flashcards
What are 3 major cell types?
Plant, animal & prokaryotic cell.
Cell wall
(Outer)
Protoplasma
(In)
What does the nucleus contain, cytoplasm, & organelles contain?
Outer non-living part of the plant cell & bacteria.
Interior living portion of the cell.
Nucleus- genetic info of cell
Cytoplasm-fluid part of protoplasm
Organelle-“little organs” within protoplasm
Cell membrane are:
Fluid-mosaic model ( layer that goes around)
Composed of phospholipid layer, keeps things in & out cell
Fluid mosaic model
Fluid ( oily consistency, things can move within bilayer)
Mosaic (proteins embedded within phospholipid bilayer)
Endoplasmic reticulum (E.R.) ( resembles coral reef)
Consists of folded membranes & tubes throughout cell, provides large surface area for important chemical reactions. Can fit in small areas because it’s folded
2 types of E.R.
Rough E.R.- ribosomes on surface, sites of protein synthesis
Smooth E.R.- lacks ribosomes, metabolizes fats, detoxifies damaging chemicals
Golgi apparatus
Stacks of flattened sacs, packages & ships things out
Lysosomes
pH 5
Vesicles containing enzymes that eat & digest macromolecules
Vacuoles & vesicles both are storage organelles, how do they differ?
Vacuoles- large, storage center holds water, salt & proteins- much smaller in animal cells than in plant cells
Vesicles- smaller vacuoles, store, transport or digest cellular products & waist
Nuclear membrane
Goes around nucleus, separates genetic info. from everything else
Chloroplasts
Plant
Sac-like organelle, contains chlorophyll, & perform photosynthesis
Name 4 non membranous. Organelles
No membranes surround organelles
- ribosomes
- cytoskeleton
- centrioles
- cilia, flagella
Ribosomes, what are they made of?
Make proteins
Found free floating in cytoplasm, attached to endoplasmic reticulum
Made of RNA & Proteins
Cytoskeleton, name 3 things it’s made of?
Shape
Provides shape, support, and movement
Microtubules, microfilaments, intermediate filaments
Centrioles
2 sets of Microtubules arranged at right angles to each other, located I region called centersome
Difference between passive & active transport?
Passive-process in which substances move across cell membrane without using energy from cell
Active- movement of a substance against its concentration gradient (low to high), uses energy
