Chapter 1 science Flashcards
STUDY TILL UR RIGHT
What is matter?
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass
Matter is the fundamental substance in physics.
Define chemistry.
The study of matter and its changes
Chemistry explores the properties, composition, and behavior of matter.
What is the Particle Theory of Matter explain?
How matter is made and how it behaves
This theory includes several key points about particles.
List the key points of the Particle Theory of Matter.
- All matter is made up of tiny particles
- All matter has tiny spaces in between them
- Particles are always moving
- Particles move faster and spread further apart when heated up
- Particles attract and tend to stay together
These points highlight the nature and behavior of particles in different states of matter.
What is a solid?
A state of matter with definite volume and definite shape
Solids maintain their shape and volume regardless of the container.
What is a liquid?
A state of matter with definite volume but indefinite shape
Liquids take the shape of their container but have a fixed volume.
What is a gas?
A state of matter with indefinite volume and indefinite shape
Gases expand to fill their container and do not have a fixed volume.
Define volume.
The measure of the quantity of space occupied by an object
Volume can be measured in various units such as liters or cubic meters.
What is a pure substance?
A matter that only contains one kind of particle
Examples include elements and compounds.
What is a mixture?
A matter that contains two or more particles
Mixtures can be classified into different types based on their composition.
What is a mechanical/heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture with different parts you can see
Examples include salad or a mixture of sand and gravel.
What is a solution/homogeneous mixture?
A mixture that looks like a single pure substance
Solutions are uniform and do not have visibly distinct parts.
Why can you see different parts of a mechanical mixture and not a solution?
The particles in a mechanical mixture don’t mix uniformly, but solutions mix uniformly
This uniformity in solutions makes them appear as a single substance.
What do wood, a salad, and your body have in common?
They are all made of different particles, which don’t mix well
Each is a heterogeneous mixture with distinguishable components.
If a balloon increases in size when blown up outside, was it colder or warmer outside?
It was hotter outside
Heat causes particles to move faster, increasing the volume of the gas inside the balloon.
When an ice cube melts, do the particles change?
The particles do not change, but they move faster causing the particles to break bonds
This process involves a change in state from solid to liquid.
Is a glass of orange juice with pulp a solution or mechanical mixture?
It is a mechanical mixture due to the pulp
The pulp represents distinct particles that do not dissolve.
Can you tell if a liquid is a solution or pure substance by looking at it?
No, you can’t
In a solution, every particle is equally distributed, making it indistinguishable.
Can a mechanical mixture consist of both solids and liquids?
Yes, a mechanical mixture can include both solids and liquids
The definition allows for various types of particles coexisting.
