Chapter 1 - Review of basic concepts Flashcards
What is a homogenous substance?
A substance that has a uniform composition throughout e.g water, sugar, petrol and apple juice.
What is a heterogenous substance?
A substance that has a non-uniform composition throughout e.g wood, beef and concrete.
What is a solution?
A solution is a homogenous mixture in which the dispersed particles (molecules or ions) are so small that they never settle out and cannot be seen by a microscope.
What is a substance that is dissolved called
A solute
What is a liquid that dissolves a substance called
A solvent
What is a suspension?
A dispersion of particles through a liquid with the particles being sufficiently large that they settle out on standing.
What is the composition of a suspension?
A suspension is heterogeneous in that the dispersed particles can be seen either by eye or by using a microscope.
What is a physical change?
A change in which no new substances are formed.
What is a chemical change?
A change in which at least one new substance is formed.
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that is still recognisable as that element.
What is a molecule?
The smallest particle of a substance that is capable of separate existence.
What is an ion?
An ion is a positively or negatively charged particle.
What is a cation?
A positively charged ion.
What is an anion?
A negatively charged ion.
What is an ionic lattice?
An ionic lattice is an orderly array of positive and negative ions.
