Chapter 1: Principles of Biology Flashcards
What does the cell theory state?
- All living organisms are made of one or more cells
- Cells are the smallest units of life
- New cells can only come from pre-existing cells by cell division
What are the 12 principles of biology?
- Cells are the simplest units of life
- Living organisms use energy
- Living organisms interact with the environment
- Living organisms maintain homeostasis
- The genetic material provides a blueprint that allows organisms to grow, develop, and reproduce
- Populations of organisms evolve from one generation to the next and are related by an evolutionary history
- Structure determines function
- New properties emerge from complex interactions
- Biology is an experimental science
- Biology is a quantitative science
- Biologists use models and simulations to test experimental predictions and convey their ideas
- Biology affects our society
Biological levels of organization
atoms molecules cells tissues organs organisms populations communities ecosystems biosphere
Evolution - vertical descent with mutation
new species evolve from pre-existing ones by the accumulation of mutations
Natural selection
when a mutation causes a benefitial change, the frequency of the mutation may increase in a population from one generation to the next
Evolution - horizontal gene transfer
a process in which an organism incorporates genetic material from another organism without being the offspring of that organism
Domains
eukarya, bacteria and archaea
Taxonomic groups
domain supergroup kingdom phylum class order familiy genus species
adaptation
a characteristic in a species that is the result of natural selection
Escherichia coli
a bacterium
model organisms
organisms studied by many different researchers so that they can compare their results and determine scientific principles that apply more broadly to other species
Saccharomyces cerevisiae
a yeast
- saccharide
- cerebro
Drosophilia melanogaster
a fruit fly
