Chapter 1 - Part 7: Protein synthesis Flashcards
How many steps are in protein synthesis?
4
Step 1 of Protein synthesis
mRNA molecule carries the code (a cope on DNA’s instruction for protein) out of the nucleus and into the cytoplasm
Step 2 of Protein synthesis
The ribosomes in the cytoplasm read the mRNA and code 3 nucleotides at a time, in codons
Step 3 of Protein synthesis
Each codon signals the ribosome to add specific amino acid to a growing polypeptide chain
Step 4 of Protein synthesis
Proteins may be sent to the endoplasmic reticulum to be modified and packaged for export in a vesicle or used within the cell
where does transcription happen?
In the nucleus
where does translation happen?
outside of the nucleus
a polypeptide chain will always start with
AUG
a polypeptide chain will always end with
UAA, UAG, UGA
what are the differences between DNA and RNA?
RNA has ribose sugar where as DNA has deoxyribose sugar
The nitrogenous bas thymine is replaced by the base Uracil in RNA
RNA is single stranded, DNA is double
RNA is usually shorter
