Chapter 1 - Part 1: Water Flashcards
How are atoms in a water molecule linked together?
Hydrogen bonds
What is the most important feature of water?
It’s DIPOLE nature
What does dipole nature in water mean?
- There is a small positive charge on each of the 2 Hydrogen atoms
- There is a small negative charge on the oxygen atom
Why is water they cohesive?
The oxygen end is negative so it is attracted to the positive end of another and forms hydrogen bonds
What does the term ‘hydrophilic’ mean?
Polar molecules can dissolve other polar molecules
Substances that can dissolve in water are called hydrophilic or polar
These substances form hydrogen bonds with water molecules
What does the term ‘hydrophobic’ mean?
Polar molecules cannot dissolve non-polar molecules
Substances that can not dissolve in water are called hydrophobia or non-polar
These substances can not form hydrogen bonds with water molecules
Define acidic
Higher concentration of H+ than OH-
Define basic
Higher concentration of OH- than H+
What is the pH of blood and its range?
7.4 (7-7.8) range of .4
What is each molecule of water made up of?
- 1 oxygen atom
- 2 hydrogen atom
H2O
