Chapter 1 Material Selection Flashcards
Define mechanical properties
Refers to how a material reacts when subjected to forces e.g strength, hardness, elasticity, plasticity, toughness, durability and brittleness
Define Physical properties
Refers to the characteristics displayed by the material in relation to non-mechanical influences. E.g density, electrical and thermal conductivity
Define strength
The measure of how good a material is at resisting being mis-shapen, or deformed when acted upon by a force
Define elasticity
Is the physical property that returns to its original shape after the stress that made it deform is removed
Define plasticity
Is the ability of a material to be shapen or formed
Define tensile strength
the resistance of a material to breaking under tension.
Define compressive strength
Ability of material to withstand pushing/ crushing forces
Define torsional strength
Ability of material to withstand twisting forces
define Bending strength
Ability to withstand bending forces
Define Shear strength
Ability to resist sliding, opposing forces
Define toughness
Is the resistance to fracture of a material when stressed. It is defined as the amount of energy per volume that a material can absorb before rupturing
Define hardness
The measure of its ability to withstand being scratched, cut or dented
Define durability
Refers to how well a material will wear over time
Define brittleness
A brittle material will fracture with little or no deformation, brittle material under tension can break suddenly without warning
Define density
Is the mass of 1 cubic centimetre of a substance
