as2 chapter 3 methods of processing materials Flashcards

1
Q

3d printing definition

A

product made in CAD the converted to a STL file and sent to the 3D printer, PLA is then used which comes in filaments. makes quick models to give better visulisation of what the product will look like, high set up costs but PLA is cheap, cant make moving parts, little to no waste in 3D printing

Q

lathes definition

A

used to cut metals, produces accurate and complex shapes that would be difficult to produce on hand operated lathes

Q

milling machine definition

A

cuts metals, produces flat and complex curved shapes, works to a fine tolerance

Q

routers definition

A

cuts wood and foam, similar to milling machine but uses softer materials, used for block modelling, can cut 2D and 3D materials

Q

die cutting definition

A

a die is used to cut through materials such as cartonboardm, it allows you to make numerous cuts multiple times, it uses steel rules that are pressed on the material onto the die to give the desired cut

Q

dye sublimation definition

A

digital printing technique that uses heat to transfer dye to materials such as fabric, metal, or ceramic, the dye coverts from a solid gas without going through a liquid stage, this creates durable and vivid images that are embedded into the surface material. can be used for medical imaging, graphic arts proofing.

Q

laminating timber definition

A

the process of joining 2 or more layers of material together to form one, this is to increase the size of the wood and increase the stability. its useful for curved pieces of wood that would usually be weakened.

Q

laminating as a finish definition

A

applies a transparent plastic film to the surface of paper and board. commercial laminating uses a polypropylene film that is glued to the paper as its fed through a heating wedge under high pressure

Q

laser cutting definition

A

A CNC machine that gets sent files from CAD with designs that will be cut onto a material, produces a clean finish because no physical contact, precise (no human error)

Q

steam bending definition

A

a supply of hot steam makes the wood soft, compressible and easy to shape, this is done with a steam chest which maintains a temperature of around 100 degrees throughout the process. usually takes 1 hour per 25mm.

Q

water jet cutting definition

A

an accelerated erosion process within a selected material. highly pressuresed water is fired through a diamond nozzle into a mixing chamber. the pressure creates a vacuum and draws garnet sand into the stream where it is then fired at the object. allows for smooth cuts on almost all materials.
