patent characteristics
protects new inventions, covers how things work what they do how they do it what there made of and how they are made, for a patent to be granted it must have a new innovative step that isn’t obvious to someone with knowledge in the subject
registered design characteristics
gives you the right to stop anyone using your design in the UK, active for up to 25 years, must have individual characteristics
design rights characteristics
gives you free automatic protection for the internal or external shape or configuration of a original design, doesn’t protect 2D designs, lasts 10 years, is a property that can be bought, sold or licenced
copy right characteristics
protects creative or artistic works, can only be used with the copyrighter’s permission, copyright applies to any medium, when an idea is fixed copyright automatically protects it
trade marks characteristics
protects any sign or symbol that allows your customers to tell you apart from your competitors, you can register a name, logo, slogan, domain name, colour, shape or sound, must renew every 10 years, must be distinctive for the goods and services you provide and not deceptive or contrary to law or morality
