Chapter 1-Living Things Flashcards
Three domains
Eukarya, bacteria, archaea
The four macromolecules
Nucleic acid, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids
Biological organization
Cells, molecules, tissues, organs, organ systems, individual, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
A systematic process used to learn about the natural world
Science
A logical approach to gathering information and reaching conclusions
Scientific method
Involves the accumulation of facts through observations until finally there are enough facts to draw a conclusion or develop a testable hypothesis
Inductive reasoning
Involves making a general statement, often in the format of an “if-then” statement, then drawing more specific conclusions from it
Deductive reasoning
Consist of several experimental groups that receive different dosages of the drugs and a control group that receives a placebo
Clinical trials
Occurs when neither researchers nor participants know which group is receiving the treatment
Double blind study
Look for patterns that occur in large populations
Epidemiological studies
