Therapist listens 1 on 1 to patient after reading a list of words.
Therapist examines response and looks for cathexis
Free association
To gain insight into unconscious/preconscious
Therapist would present patient with a word and listen for patients response while they were in a relaxed state(couch) the patient would speak there stream of thoughts out loud.
Dream Analysis
To identify hidden content
Therapist asks patient to keep a dream journal, then examines journal and looks for and hidden meanings.
Transference
To overcome resistance and promote insight.
When patient acts/feels towards therapist the same way they did towards an important person in their life.
Oral stage
- (birth-2)
- theme:mouth and feeding
- conflict:child must give up breastfeeding
- causes: over-gratifying at the mouth can lead to oral fixation. Because all the libidal energy is cathected at the mouth.
- As adult:eat,drink or smoke…guilible,sadistic,cynical,hostile(fingernail biter or symbolic action.)
Anal stage
- (2-4)
- theme:anus and relieving oneself
- conflict:toilet trained
- too much control= anal retentive(rigid and orderly)
- not enough control= anal expulsive(lacks self control & messy)
Phallic stage(4-7) Two complexes
Theme=genitals and desire
Oedipus complex=
-boys desire mother and see dad as a rival
-boy repressed his sexual desire for mom and later on the boy identifies with father and has harmless affection for mother.
-channels his impulses towards becoming like dad so he can have someone like mom.
Electra complex=
- girls experience penis envy and blame mother
- desire s father and wishes to replace mom
- wants to be more like father/brother later on generalizes or repressed these impulses and identifies with mom.
