A

objective: implement (to put in affect) word association:
- perhaps, early on
- 1 on 1
- Read list of words (neutral & otherwise)
- finally, examine responses: cathexis? (cathexis: the process by which the available libidinal energy in the psyche is attached or invested in a person, idea or thing. Once it is released, this same energy may be redirected and become available for other current needs.)

Free association

A

Objective: Goal is to gain insight, self-awareness implement free association:

  • relaxed state
  • verbalize all thoughts to therapist’s questions
  • extend period of time-why? 1 year or longer
  • Hopefully, ego relaxes so that we gan access to preconscious
  • figure out (make conscious) whether and why defines mechanisms are in operation
  • does not fit everyone
  • extended ongoing sessions (6+ months)
  • Payments
  • 4 to 5 hours per week
  • Patient must be articulate, reflective, willing to do “homework”

A

Dream analysis

A

Objective: to idnetifiy hidden content that is troubling
Implement dream analysis:
-Dream journal upon waking
-obtain extended records
-Freudian therapist interprets the manifest to figure out the latent: wish fulfillment, anxiety, unsatisfied
Symbolic meaning?

Latent content- under the surface

Oral stage (birth- 2 years)

A

theme: Mouth and feeling (explore with their mouth)
Conflict: Child must give up great feeding (oral stimulation)
–> under or over gratification
–> cathexis (at the mouth)
–>fixation of symbolic erogenous zone
Two personality outcomes:
-As an adult: if fixation occurs during first year:
1) oral incorporative- literally (eat, smoke, drink) and figuratively (gullible)
2) if fixation occurs after first year (onset of teeth);
Oral sadistic- cynical, hostile (fingernail biter or symbolic action).
Ids more active, ego lower (sleeping,unconscious)

Anal Stage (2-4 years)

A

Theme: anus and relieving oneself
Conflict: child is “toilet trained”
Two personality outcomes
1) To much control-anal retentive: rigid, orderly
2) Not enough control-anal expulsive: lacks self control, messy.

Phallic Stage (4-7 years)

A

Theme: genitals & desire
Oedipus complex-Boys desire mother
Electra complex-(feminine oedipus attitude)-Girls experience “penis envy”
Conflict: Recongize difference between males and females
–> Oedipus complex:-Each boy longs for mother and sees father as rival
-Boy represses his sexual desire for mom due to fear of castration
-Boy identifies with father & had harmless affection for mother
-Channels him impulses toward finding someone just like mom
–> feminine Oedipus attitude (Electra complex)
Each girls desires father & wishes to replace mom
-experiences penis envy, blames mother
-wants to be more like father & brothers
-somehow represses our generalizes these impulses & identifies with mom
Problematic personality outcomes
1) promiscuous
2)Asexual
