Chapter 1-freud Flashcards
conscious
Small portion of the mind; it includes only what we are aware of in any given moment
preconscious
Is part of the unconscious, but a part that can easily be made conscious. accessible portions of memory are part of the preconscious.
unconscious
Within the unconscious are instinctual elements that have never been conscious and are never accessible to consciousness.
id
Basic impulses (sex and aggression); seeking immediate gratification; irrational and impulsive. Operates at the unconscious level.
Ego
Executive mediating between id impulses and superego inhibitions; testing reality; rational. Operates mainly at conscious level but also at pre conscious level.
Superego
Ideals and morals; striving for perfection. Operates at the conscious level.
word association
objective: implement (to put in affect) word association:
- perhaps, early on
- 1 on 1
- Read list of words (neutral & otherwise)
- finally, examine responses: cathexis? (cathexis: the process by which the available libidinal energy in the psyche is attached or invested in a person, idea or thing. Once it is released, this same energy may be redirected and become available for other current needs.)
Free association
Objective: Goal is to gain insight, self-awareness implement free association:
- relaxed state
- verbalize all thoughts to therapist’s questions
- extend period of time-why? 1 year or longer
- Hopefully, ego relaxes so that we gan access to preconscious
- figure out (make conscious) whether and why defines mechanisms are in operation
- does not fit everyone
- extended ongoing sessions (6+ months)
- Payments
- 4 to 5 hours per week
- Patient must be articulate, reflective, willing to do “homework”
Transference
Objective: By product of free association: Act and feels towards therapist as you did toward Important person in your life
-therapeutic relationship may be used to overcome resistance and promote insight
Dream analysis
Objective: to idnetifiy hidden content that is troubling
Implement dream analysis:
-Dream journal upon waking
-obtain extended records
-Freudian therapist interprets the manifest to figure out the latent: wish fulfillment, anxiety, unsatisfied
Symbolic meaning?
Manifest content-things you recall
Latent content- under the surface
*(Wish fulfillment: an aspect of dreams that may be considered as an alternative pathway of satisfy the desires of the id)
Psychosexual stages
oral, anal, phallic
Oral stage (birth- 2 years)
theme: Mouth and feeling (explore with their mouth)
Conflict: Child must give up great feeding (oral stimulation)
–> under or over gratification
–> cathexis (at the mouth)
–>fixation of symbolic erogenous zone
Two personality outcomes:
-As an adult: if fixation occurs during first year:
1) oral incorporative- literally (eat, smoke, drink) and figuratively (gullible)
2) if fixation occurs after first year (onset of teeth);
Oral sadistic- cynical, hostile (fingernail biter or symbolic action).
Ids more active, ego lower (sleeping, unconscious)
Anal Stage (2-4 years)
Theme: anus and relieving oneself
Conflict: child is “toilet trained”
Two personality outcomes
1) To much control-anal retentive: rigid, orderly
2) Not enough control-anal expulsive: lacks self control, messy.
Phallic Stage (4-7 years)
Theme: genitals & desire
Oedipus complex-Boys desire mother
Electra complex-(feminine oedipus attitude)-Girls experience “penis envy”
Conflict: Recongize difference between males and females
–> Oedipus complex:-Each boy longs for mother and sees father as rival
-Boy represses his sexual desire for mom due to fear of castration
-Boy identifies with father & had harmless affection for mother
-Channels him impulses toward finding someone just like mom
–> feminine Oedipus attitude (Electra complex)
Each girls desires father & wishes to replace mom
-experiences penis envy, blames mother
-wants to be more like father & brothers
-somehow represses our generalizes these impulses & identifies with mom
Problematic personality outcomes
1) promiscuous
2)Asexual
