What is Public Speaking?
An act of communication between two parties, with a clearly identified speaker who formally presents a message to achieve a purpose.
Why is Public Speaking a transactional process?
Because it is a constant and ever flowing exchange between the speaker and their audience. The message of a speaker is delivered through a channel and projected to the audience who listen and then decode the message of the speaker. In turn, the speaker receives feedback from the audience and uses it to adjust their speech to achieve their goal.
What is a channel?
A medium of projections for the message, whether it be television or the radio. Noise often interferes with interpretations of the message.
What is noise?

Why do speeches go beyond their content?
Because the speaker and the audience form a relationship that can lead to effective speaking if they both maintain shared meaning.
What is shared meaning?
A mutual understanding of the speaker’s perspective within the audience.
How can you be a more effective public speaker?
Speakers are more effective when they understand the context in which they are speaking, are appropriate in that context, abide by the rules of culture, manner, and language in a context, and show that they have the skill to continue to a be a successful speaker, with many speeches that are successful as well.
Why is it important to be sensitive as a public speaker?
Being able to read, decode, and react to the subtle messages that the audience sends you helps you create respect. Developing a commitment to the audience and striving for excellence allows for continued success in public speaking.
Why are ethics an important consideration in public speaking?
If you follow the basic ethical guidelines of respect, fairness, responsibility, honesty, and give the audience a chance to choose their side of argument in their own time, then you will become valued and more effective in public speaking.
What are the 5 basic ethical principles?
