Ventral
Toward the front of the body or the belly and chest in a human
Anterior
Toward the front of the body or the belly and chest in a human
Dorsal
Toward the back of the body or the spine
Posterior
Toward the back of the body or the spine
Cephalic
Toward the head
Superior; also referred to as cranial
Above; describes a position above or higher than another part of the body proper
Rostral
Toward the nose or forehead
Inferior
Below
Caudal
Toward the tail or inferior end (in humans, the coccyx, or lowest part of the spinal column. Describes a position below or lower than another part of the body proper; also referred to as inferior
Medial
Toward the midsagittal plane. Describes the middle or direction toward the middle of the body.
Lateral
Away from the midsagittal plane. Describes the side or direction toward the side of the body.
Proximal
Describes a position nearer to the point of attachment point or trunk of the body
Distal
Further from the attachment point or trunk of the body
Superficial
Close to the surface
Deep
Further from the surface
Ipsilateral
The same side
Contralateral
The opposite side
Sagittal plane
vertical plane that divides the body or organ along a midline into right and left portions. Median plane or midsagittal plane divides the entire body into right and left
Midsagittal or median plane runs directly down the middle of the body. Parasagittal plane or longitudinal section divides the body into unequal right and left sides.
