chapter 1 and 2 Flashcards
what are chordates
animals that dorsal nerve cords
what are vetebrates
animals that have a spinal column protecting their spinal cords
what is physiological psychology?
- study of neural mechanisms of behaviour through manipulation of brain in controlled experiments
ie) removing parts of brain in rats to assess ability in tests
what is psychopharmocology?
study of manipulation of neural activation using drugs
what is neuropsychology?
study of psychological effects of brain damage in patients
what is psychophysiology?
- study of the relation b/1 physiological activity and psychological process
ie) familiar faces Alicia ANS response even when patient with brain damage doesn’t recognize the person
what is cognitive neuroscience?
study of neural bases of cognition and higher intellectual processes
what is comparative psych?
- comparing the behaviour of different species to understand the evolution, genetics, and adaptiveness of behaviour
what is Korsakoff’s syndrome?
severe memory loss caused by alcohol abuse
what are converging operations?
the use of different approaches to one problem as the strengths of one approach will compensate for the weaknesses of the other
what is the difference b/w in vivo and in vitro experiments?
- In vivo experiment conducted in whole living organisms
- In vitro experiments done on part of a living organism in a lab setting (petri dish)
what is odd about the 16 families of primates?
they have no common characteristics
Analogous traits in animals that are quite different is due to ___.
convergent evolution
homologous traits in animals that are similar is due to ___.
common ancestors
Brain size is not a good indicator of IQ
Brain stem to cerebrum ratios.
