Chapter 1 Flashcards
Define Superior / Inferior in relation to the Anatomical Position
Superior - above
Inferior - below
Ex:
Head is Superior to Foot
Foot is Inferior to your Head
Define Medial / Lateral in relation to the Anatomical Position
Medial - Closer to the Midline
Lateral - Further from the Midline
Ex:
Eyes are Medial to Ears
Ears are Lateral to your eyes
What is the Midline in relation to the Anatomical Position
The midline is an imaginary vertical line drawn right down the center of the body.
Define Anterior / Posterior in relation to the Anatomical Position
Anterior - In front of
Posterior - Behind
Ex:
Navel is Anterior to Spine
Spine is Posterior to your Navel
Define Superficial / Deep in relation to the Anatomical Position
Superficial - More toward the outside of body
Deep - more toward the inside of the body
Ex:
Skin is Superficial to your muscles
Muscles are Deep to your skin
Define Ipsilateral / Contralateral in relation to the Anatomical Position
Ipsilateral - on the same side of body
Contralateral - on opposite sides of body
Ex:
Left Foot is Contralateral to Right Hand
Right Foot is Ipsilateral to Right Hand
Define Proximal / Distal in relation to the Anatomical Position
These are the least Intuitive of comparative terms. They refer to how near or far away a body part is from the attachment to the main trunk of the body, primarily they refer to positions along the arm or leg.
Proximal - Closer to attachment of the trunk
Distal - Farther away from the attachment of the trunk
Ex:
Wrist is Proximal to fingers
Fingers are Distal to your wrist
