Chapter 1 Flashcards
Cerebrum
Major structure of the forebrain. Consists of two identical hemispheres and is responsible for most conscious behaviour.
Brainstem
Central structure of the brain. Responsible for most unconscious behaviour.
Cerebellum
Major structure of the brainstem. Specialized for learning and coordinating skilled movements.
Neuron
Specialized nerce call involved with information processing.
Spinal Cord
Part of the CNS encased in vertebrae. Provides most connection between brain and body.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
The brain and the spinal cord that together mediates behaviour.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The neurons in the body lacted outside the brain and spinal cord.
Embodied Language
The movements we make and perceive are central to communication.
Psyche
Synonym for mind. Once proposed to be the source of human behaviour.
Mind
Non-material entity responsible for intelligence attention awareness and consciousness.
Mentalism
Explanation of behaviour as a function of the non-material mind.
Dualism
Non-material mind and a material body both contribute to behaviour.
Who is credited with the theory of dualism?
Rene Descartes
Mind-body Problem
The problem of explaining how a non-material mind and a material body interact.
Materialism
Behaviour can be fully explained by the brain and the rest of the nervous systems workings.
