Chapter 1 Flashcards
Epidemiology
the study of health determinants and disease distribution in specified populations and application of research to control future health problems
population-based approach
a preventative measure is widely applied to an entire population - more of a Public health approach
high-risk approach
often require a clinical action to identify the high-risk group to be targeted
Primary
preventing the initial development of a disease
Ex. Immunization, reducing exposure to a risk factor
Secondary
Early detection of an existing disease to reduce severity or complications.
Ex. Screening for cancer
Tertiary
Reducing the impact of the disease
Ex. Rehabilitation for a stroke
Morbidity
illness, the presence of the disease
Mortality
Death
John Snow
Main contribution: Interviewed people (qualitative) determined distribution of disease. translated epidemiologic observations into public policy
Etiology
the cause of a disease
