define disease
interruption, cessation, or disorder of a body system or organ structure that is characterized usually by a recognized etiologic agent or agents, and identifiable group of signs and symptoms or consistent anatomic alterations.
What is etiology?
the cause of disease
What are risk factors?
pre-disposers of a disease
Define pathogenesis.
The sequence of cellular and tissue events from time of contact with etiological event until expression of the disease.
Describe the difference between a symptom and a sign.
A symptom is something reported by the pt.
A sign is something noted by the nurse.
What is a manifestation?
a sign or symptom
Define a syndrome.
signs and symptoms of a specific disease state often when etiology is not well understood.
What is a complication?
a possible/actual adverse extensions of disease or as a result of treatment.
Define sequelae.
impairments that are caused by a disease.
ex infection would be a complication, a sequelae would be scarring or organ damage.
