Chapter 1 Flashcards
List the layers
Crust, mantle, inner core, outer core
How many layers is the earth made of
4
What is the crust
Solid rock, covers earth, continental crust is thicker, not a one piece
What is mantle
Under crust, composed of molten magma, very hot, flows in currents
What is the core
Centre of earth, very hot, between 3000c and 5000c, made of iron! solid in centre! divided into two
Plates
The crust is divided into plates
When plates slide past each other
Pressure builds up before they move, movement causes earthquakes
When plates push together
Heavier plate sinks under lighter, huge pressure builds up along plate boundaries causes earthquakes volcanoes fold mountains. DESTRUCTIVE PLATE BOUNDARY
When plates separate
Magma enters cracks and forms volcanoes, mid-ocean ridges are formed and new land is added. New land forms islands. CONSTRUCTIVE PLATE BOUNDARY
Continental drift
Earths plates are always moving small distances each year, plates collide separate or slide past
How are fold mountains made
Two plates collide, pressure makes the plates slowly fold, crust is compressed, buckles to form mountains like when paper folds
Anticline and Syncline
Anticline is the upfold, Syncline is the downfold
4 alpine fold mountains
The alps the Andes the Himalayas the Rockies
Names of plates
Eurasian Indian Arabian pacific Antarctic indo-Australian African North Amercian Carribean South American nazca
