Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is feedforward control?
When the body can predict that a change is about to occur and it starts the response loop. Like when our mouth gets watery when we smell, think, or see food.
What are circadian rhythms?
Regulated variables that coincide with light-dark cycles.
What is a Hypothesis?
A logical guess
What is Meta-Analysis?
combined data from studies to observe a trend
What is the difference between anatomy and physiology?
Anatomy is the “structural” part. Physiology is learning how the body functions as an organism including all chemical and physical processes.
What are the main fluid compartments of the body? What major solutes are in each? What physical barrier separates them?
Internal Environment which has Intracellular fluid ICF and extracellular fluid ECF. The ICT is 2/3 of TBW. major solutes inclue K+ and A-. A cell membrane separates these 2 compartments. The ECF is 1/3 TBW, major solutes include Na+ and Cl-.
What are the 3 main elements in the Human body?
H,C,O
What are Conjugated proteins?
protein molecules combined with other kinds of biomolecules. Example, lipids combine with proteins=lipoproteins.
what biomolecule is made up motsly of C and H?
Lipids
What 2 main categories can lipids be divided into?
Fats, Oils
A simple 3 carbon molecule that makes up the backbone of most lipids?
Glycerol
What is the primary source of steroids in the body?
Cholesterol
What are the molecules in a Fatty acid?
Its a long chain of C bound to H with a Carboxyl (COOH) which is an acid group at the end of the chain.
What are the molecules in an Amino Acid?
A carboxyl group COOH. Amino group -NH2. An H attached to a C, and the R group (variable)
