Involves a progressive change in the substance & structure of the cells - creating new tissue
Prenatal
Intrauterine period before birth
- 38 weeks calculated from the time of fertilization
- 40 weeks calculated from the 1st day of the last menstrual period
Pre-embryonic
Fertilization to 2 weeks after fertilization
Embryonic period
From the 2nd week to the 8th week after fertilization
Fetal period
From 8th week to 38th week
Prediction for the time of birth
Last menstrual period + 1yr -3 months + 1 week
Infancy
Birth to 1yr
Childhood
1yr to puberty
Puberty
Humans become capable of procreation
Adulthood
Person reaches full maturity 18-20 yrs. old
Abortion
Stopping of development- the embryo of fetus is miscarried from the uterus before it is viable to live on its own
Threatened abortion
- Women is showing signs of losing embryo
- Bleeding & cramping
- 25% of clinically apparent pregnancies threaten abortion & 1/4 of these DO abort
Spontaneous abortion
- Miscarriage
- W/out outside intervention
Habitual abortion
Woman who has had 3 or more miscarriages & cannot birth a viable fetus
Induced abortion
Medically induced before the fetus is viable (before 20 weeks)
