Attempted to explain personality, motivation, and mental disorders by focusing on unconsciousness.

Focuses on how objects and events in the environment come to control behavior through learning.

Behavior patterns have evolved to solve adaptive problems. (Fight or flight response)

Asserted that health is best understood by looking at a combination of biological, psychological, and social influences. One cannot go without the other.
