What is psychopharmacology?
Study of how drugs affect mood, perception, thinking, or behaviour
What are psychoactive drugs?
Drugs that affect mood, perception, thinking, or behaviour by acting in the nervous system
Behavioural Pharmacology
The study of how drugs affect behaviour. Sometimes behavioural pharmacologists emphasize principles used in field of behaviour analysis
Neuropsychopharmacology
The study of how drugs affect the nervous system and how these nervous system changes alter behaviour
Traditional definition of what a drug is?
Any substance that alters the physiology of the body
Contemporary definition of what a drug is
Any substance that alters the physiology of the body but is NOT a food
Drug Names?
Generic, Trade, Chemical, Street
Generic - non-proprietary name that indicates classification for a drug and distinguishes it from others in the same class
Trade - trademarked name a company provides
Chemical - drugs chemical structure
Street - given by those who use, sell, or illegally make recreational
Potency
Amount of drugs used to produce certain magnitude of effect
Effectiveness
Ability of a drug to elicit a response regardless of dose
Pharmacodynamics
The physiological actions of drugs
Pharmacokinetics
How drugs move and pass through the body
Pharmacogenetics
How genetic differences influence a drugs pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects
Common routes of Administration
Inhalation, Oral, Intramuscular, Intravenous, Transdermal, Sublingual
Absorption
Refers to the passage of a drug from the site of administration to the bloodstream
Distribution
Passage of a drug from the bloodstream to sites in the body
