Chapter 1 Flashcards
How many MIDI channels are supported by one MIDI connection
16
What does MSS stand for?
MIDI Studio Setup (Windows)
What is MSS used for?
Used to configure a Windows computer to recognize MIDI controllers and sound modules.
How do you bring up MIDI studio dialogue on Windows?
SETUP > MIDI > MIDI STUDIO
What does AMS stand for?
Audio MIDI Setup (MAC)
How do you bring up MIDI studio dialogue on Windows?
SETUP > MIDI > MIDI STUDIO
True or False.
The Windows MIDI Studio is different from the MAC one.
True.
What 5 configurable properties are available in MIDI Studio?
- Instrument Name
- Manufacturer
- Model
- Input Port
- Output Port
How do you bring up the properties of a MIDI device in AMS?
Double-click the device icon.
Explain MIDI signal flow with an external synthesizer.
MIDI data from the MIDI controller or synthesizer is sent to a MIDI or instrument track. MIDI data from the track is sent back to the synthesizer. Audio from the synthesizer is sent back to an Audio, Aux Input or Instrument track.
What is MIDI beat clock?
A synchronization signal that contains timing pulses based on tempo.
What is the rate of timing pulses in MIDI beat clock?
24 pulses per quarter note
What does the MIDI Beat clock do?
Allows MIDI devices to play back in time with session tempo.
What is Ableton link?
A synchronization technology designed by Ableton to keep multiple music applications in time with one another.
What does Ableton link do?
Synchronizes musical beat, tempo and phrase between applications over a LAN. Start and stop commands can also be shared across applications.
Where can the ableton link controls be displayed?
Transport window and Edit window
What does the quantize selector do?
Lets you choose the bar/beat cylce for synchronizing playback.
True or False.
External MIDI devices output LINE level.
True.
What does identify beat command let you do?
Specify how many bars and beats a performance is and pro tools will realign the grid accordingly. The tempo is also updated.
How do you use identify beat?
EVENT > IDENTIFY BEAT
or
COMMAND + I (MAC)
CTRL + I (WINDOWS)
Why is it important to ensure that each MIDI device in a daisy chain setup uses unique channels for its MIDI signals?
Otherwise there will be crosstalk between midi devices and their MIDI signals will be combined.
What two signal flow systems are involved when working with MIDI instruments?
Control signal (MIDI)
and
Audio Signal
Where can you see the number of currently connected ableton link peers?
In the top right corner of the Ableton link control window.
Explain MIDI Routing in pro tools.
- MIDI message is generated by keyboard controller
- MIDI signal enters computer via USB or MIDI port.
- MIDI is routed to a MIDI or Intrument track using the MIDI input selector
- MIDI signal is recorded and passed to a MIDI instrument via the MIDI output selector
