deal with reality, mediates demands of relatiy with the ids demands for immediate gratification
When does the superego develop
during childhood
What does the superego control
They incorporate parental values as their own to recieve pleasure and approval and to avoid disapproval
Explain repression
Keeping impulses or wishes from awareness. Someone abused as a baby doesn’t recollect it, but has trouble connecting with others
Explain denial
Not accepting reality into consciousness. Ex. Victim of abuse does not acknowledge they were abused
Explain projection
Saying someone else’s thoughts when they’re really your thoughts. A man who hates members of a group believes its them who don’t like him
Explain displacement
Redirectig emotional responses from real target to someone else. Getting mad at brother but acts angry to friend
Explain reaction formation
Converting unaccaptable feeling to its opposite- person with sexual feelings to children leads a campaign to end sexual abuse

Retreating to earlier patterns of stage of development. Adolescent seeks oral gratification

Offering acceptable reasons for an unacceptable action- parent berates child out of impatients but indicates that they did so to build character

Converting unacceptable aggressive or sexual impulses to socially valued behaviors. Someone who is angry at their father becomes a surgeon
