Chapter 1 Flashcards
Biosphere
All living things and the places they live (the earth and its atmosphere)
Ecosystems
All living and nonliving things in a particular area
Communities
An array of organisms inhabiting a given ecosystem
Populations
All individuals of a species living within a given area
Organisms
Individual living things
Organs
Handle specific bodily functions in an organism
Tissues
Groups of cells that make up organs
Cells
The basic unit of life relating to structure and function
Molecules
A chemical structure consisting of two or more atoms
Atoms
The basic unit of matter (The smallest state of matter through chemical processes)
Producers
Plants and other photosynthetic organisms that convert light or chemicals into energy
Consumers
organisms that feed on producers or other consumers
DNA
Acid structure that holds your genetic information
Genes
The units of inheritance that transmit information from parents to offspring
Eukaryotic Cell
Cell type which is subdivided into organelles such as the nucleus
Prokaryotic Cell
Cell type lacking organelles and whose DNA is moves throughout the cell (Not having a nucleus)
Reductionism
Reducing complex ideas into simpler components that are more manageable to study
Negative Feedback
An accumulation of end product of a process slows down that process (A process is reversed)
Positive Feedback
An end product speeds up the process (A process is boosted via feedback)
Hypothesis
A possible answer to a well framed question
Theory
A broad concept based on observations and evidence which many hypotheses can be created from
