Evidence-based treatments
Therapies that are supported by research.
Empiricism
Evidence comes from sences or instruments that help to quantify the senses as the basis for conclusions.
Theory Cycle
Theory → research questions → research design → hypotheses → data.
Qualities of good theories
- Supported by data.
- Falsifiable.
- Parsimonious.
How are theories evaluated?
Supporting data strengthen the theory, non-supporting data lead to revised theories. Theories are evaluated on basis of the evidence.
Applied research
Based on a practical problem.
Basic research
Meant to enhance the general body of knowledge.
Translational research
Bridge between basic and applied research.
How can we further enhance research?
Through testing why, when and for whom a specific effect works.
Falsificeerbaarheid
Het moet mogelijk zijn om een theorie te weerleggen. Dit kan ook zonder dat dat ooit gebeurd is.
Wat gebeurt er als een voorspelling op basis van de theorie uitkomt?
Dan houd je de theorie aan. Je controleert één concrete voorspelling, maar een theorie doet oneindig veel voorspellingen.
Wat gebeurt er als een voorspelling niet uitkomt?
Dan klopt de theorie niet of is de studie niet goed gegaan. De theorie kan aangepast worden, maar dit kan leiden tot onfalsificeerbaarheid.
Empirische cyclus
Observatie → theorie → voorspelling → toetsing → evaluatie.
