Q

what is acetylation of lysine?

A
  • the addition of an acetyl group to the basic N of lysine’s side group removes its positive charge and by doing so, it weakens the interaction between a histone and the DNA that it organizes. when repeated over seceral lysine units, the cumulative effect of acetylation is to loosen the DNA, creating more space for transcription factors to actively transcribe the DNA
    • associated with upregulated gene expression
