Four step method of skills training.
Near miss, fire ground problem, observed deficiency
Indicators for more training
Write a lesson plan, break the topic down into units, show what to teach, order and what procedures will be covered, use a guide to help with the objective.
Preparation
Lecture or instructional portion, Officer demonstrates a skill one step at a time, lesson plan allows the officer to stay on topic.
Presentation
The fire fighter demonstrates the skill, the officer can provide immediate feedback.
Application
May be a written or practical exam. The fire officer can ensure that training has occurred when there is observable change.
Evaluation
A more experienced person helps a less experienced person.
Mentoring
Desire to help, current knowledge, effective coaching, counseling, facilitating, and networking skills.
Qualities of a good mentor
Requires more time than maintaining proficiency. Lectures or videos should not last more than 10 minutes. Practice new skills by encouraging adventure, challenge and competition.
Provide new or revised skill sets.
The fire officer works as a coach when providing training.
first, team members learn the basic skills, then, the coach works with them to build competence and confidence.
Blood Bourne pathogens, hazmat, SCBA fit testing, NIMS emergency scene awareness
Skills that must be learned immediately.
Supply line evolutions, ropes and knots, laddering te fire building, lights, fan and power deployment
Kills necessary for staying alive
Safety, fire behavior, portable extinguishers, PPE, ladders, fire hose, overhaul, water supply, ventilation, forcible entry, building construction
NFPA 1001 prerequisites for firefighter
Must be equipped with PPE, PASS, and SCBA
Live fire training
Aquired structures, gas-fired training center buildings, non-gas fired training bldgs., exterior props, exterior class B fires
