Chapt6 Extinction / Differential Reinforcement Flashcards
Extinction
Withholding the reinforcers that maintains a target behavior
Extinctions aims to reduce the frequency of the target behavior
Rules for extinction
- Define the target behavior
- Identify the reinforcers that maintain a target behavior
- Withhold all reinforcement of the target behavior.
- Monitor results
Problems with extinction
- Uncontrolled Reinforcement
2. Slowness: it may take time to change behavior
Side effects
- Extinction burst : a sharp increase in the frequency of the behavior on extinction.
- Resurgence: The reappearance, during extinction of previously effective behavior.
Spontaneous recovery: Reappearance of the target behavior following its extinction.
Differential reinforcement:
Any procedure that combines extinction and reinforcement to change the frequency of a target behavior.
You can use differential reinforcement to increase or decrease the frequency of a behavior.
DRL - low rate
The procedure to reinforcing the target behavior only when it occurs at a low rate.
DRA- alternative
The procedure of reinforcing an alternative behavior instead of the target behavior
Crying babies of discomfort
DRI- incompatible
The procedure of reinforcing a behavior that is incompatible with the target behavior.
Example: reinforcing sitting and not walking
Rules for using Differential Reinforcement
- Define target behavior
- Put the undesirable target behavior on extinction
- Reinforce the desirable target behavior
- Monitor results
Resurgence Side effect
The reappearance, during extinction, of a previously effective behavior.
Spontaneous Side Effect extinction
The reappearance of the target behavior following its extinction.
