Aesthetic Reading
reading for enjoyment or pleasure. Reader focuses on experiences and images, feelings, and associations evoked by text.
Efferent reading
Reading for information (to carry away). Reader concentrates on public references and symbols of text.
Almost every reading experience calls for
a balance between aesthetic and efferent reading (rosenblatt)
Theory of Reader Reponse
reading is a transaction btween reader and text - equally important
Traditional views of reading
text was more important that reader’s interpretation
Implications of Reader Response
activate schema, small group discussions, written responses , then whole group discussions
Purpose of Journaling
develop fluency, monitor comprehension, metacognitive strategies
Read Aloud helps students
“feel text” in a nonthreatening way, builds background, more varied syntax and vocabulary and is plaesurable
When reading is pleasurable it
increases retention and activates the AFFECTIVE domain.
Poetry in Literature increases retention because
rhythm affects fluency, hits affective domain with imagery and metaphor, etc.
Literature Discussion Group
meets frequently, students have roles, teacher has role of observer or facilitator or visitor, debriefing is essential, PURPOSE to foster the “grand conversation” requires a supportive respectful environment
