Que les participants aient cédé ou soient restés indépendants, ils ont pour la plupart été profondément perturbés par ce décalage entre ce qu’ils voyaient et ce qu’ils croyaient que les autres voyaient.

Q

Factors affecting the degree of conformity?

A

-Asch found that the size of the opposition only has an effect up to a certain point (3 or 4 individuals answering incorrectly)
- effect of the unanimity : when introducing a supporting partner or a individual instructed to disagree with both the group and the subject
The rate of conformity was reduced.
- asch manipulated the discrepancy between the standard Line to reach a point where the error was so blatantly obvious that the subject would be sure to choose the correct answer:
Despite the exagerated difference, they were still some participants who went with the majority

Q

Cultural difference and conformity

A
  • since Asch’s studies, the level of conformity has steadly declined.
-literature shows that individuals from collectivist cultures, rather than individualist cultures, are more likely to YIELD to the majority, given the higher value placed on harmony in person-to-group relations.
    (See Milgram’s experiments norwegian / French-1961)
Social cohesiveness could go with a high degree of conformity
