What is skin?
the body’s largest organ, serves as a protective shield
4 structures of the skin?
stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum corneum
What is the epidermis composed of and the layers in order?
consists mostly of keratinocytes, Langerhans cells, and melanocytes

what does the dermis consist of?
connective tissue, blood vessels, oil and sweat glands, nerves, hair follicles
what is subcutaneous?
beneath, or under, all the layers of the skin
what is keratinization?
the cells form fibrils of keratin and harden
what are Melanocytes?
A cell in the skin and eyes that produces and contains the pigment called melanin
what is the dermal papillae?
The thin top layer of the dermis
what is Meissner’s corpuscles (of touch)?
responsible for transmitting the sensations of fine, discriminative touch and vibration
what is Pacinian corpuscles (lamellated)?
the sensing of deep touch/pressure and vibration.
What is melanin?
produces hair, eye and skin pigmentation
what is albinism?
genetic disorder that results in decreased production of a pigment called melanin
what are epidermal ridges/fingerprints?
Fingerprints are the pattern of the epidermal ridges on fingers.
what is hair?
Each hair has a hair shaft and a hair root. The shaft is the visible part of the hair that sticks out of the skin. The hair root is in the skin and extends down to the deeper layers of the skin. It is surrounded by the hair follicle
what are sebaceous glands?
produce and secrete sebum
