chap 6 - energy Flashcards
what does your energy expenditure consist of?
Pyshical activity, Basal Metabolism, and Thermogenesis
TEE (total Energy Expenditrue)
TEE = Basal needs (60%) + Activity (30%) + Thermogenesis (10%)
BEE (Basal energy Expenditure)
Total amount of energy you use to sustain basic life processes
breathing, blood circulation, organs, brain
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
The rate of your BEE at rest
you measure o2 and co2 after waking up
-age and gender play a role
Methods to measure BMR
- ventilated hood
- Human Calorimeter
-direct (body heat)
-indirect (co2 & o2 release)
RMR/REE (resting metabolic rate)
always slightly higher than BMR by around 10-20%
this is because RMR is measure during light activities
BMR for men and women?
1 kcal/kg/hr —–> men
0.9 kcal/kg/hr —-> women
what is Lean Body mass
everything besides FAT
anything that is burning calories
What happens to BMR and Lean body mass when you get fatter?
increases Lean Body mass AND BMR
- need more muscle to support wheight
- hypertrophy of heart and organs
- more vasularization
what creates the highest - lowest metabolic response to injury aznd illness?
- burn
- infection
- bone broken
—normal
-1. partial starvation
-2. total starvation
What is Thermogenesis?
contributes to TEE equation
Types:
1. stress
2. drugs (caffine, nic, alchohol)
3. cold
4. Dietary Induced thermogenesis
does caffine give you kcal energy?
no
why does metabolic rate increase with food intake?
- digestion process
- absorbtion
- More biosynthesis
all of this takes energy after youve eaten
BMI calculation
BMI = weight (kg) / height ^2 (m)
Limitaitons of BMI
- no pregnant/lactating
- no kids
- (muscular athletes)
- (grow past 18)
- (fat + fit)
- (ethnic groups)
- (older)
- no fat distribution
