Executive branch
The President, executes laws of Congress to the people
Formal powers
Powers strictly stated in the Constitution
Informal powers
Powers not in the Constitution but are necessary to carry out expressed powers
Treaty
An agreement made and negotiated by the President to foreign countries and needs a ⅔ vote in the senate to ratify
State of Union Address
A way for the President to inform the public and other parts of government about national affairs
Veto
A bill already passed by Congress that is rejected by the President (will not give the law to the people)
Pocket Veto
A veto but after the 10 day mark when Congress adjourned at the end of a session
Presidential pardon
The president can release individuals who have been charged with federal crimes
Executive privilege
A right the president has to keep certain conversations, documents, etc confidential
Executive agreement
An agreement made by the President and another nation that doesn’t need senate ratification
Signing statement
The President’s political statements or reasons for signing a bill into law
Impeachment
The act of taking a president out of office with the article to impeach and a ⅔ vote by the House to remove them completely
Executive order
Policy directives made by the President that doesn’t need Congress’s approval
War Powers Resolution
A law that was passed even after President Nixon’s veto that restricted the power to keep troops at combat for more than 60 days without congressional authorization
Executive Office of the President
Different offices in the White House that give the president information and also help them reach their policy goals
