Chap 4 Flashcards
Precipitate
Insolibule solid caused by reaction
ME, CIE, NE
ME: molecular equation, balanced, everything included, no ions
CIE: complete ionic equation, all ions
NE: spectator ions (strong electrolyte) aside, only precipitate present
Strong acids
HNO3
H2SO4
HClO4
HCl
HBr
HI
Strong bases
LiOH
NaOH
KOH
Ca(OH)2
Sr(OH)2
Ba(OH)2
Arrhenius acid/base
Acid produces H+ when dissolved in water, base produces OH-
Bronsted-Lowry acid/base
Acid donates a proton, base accepts a proton
Polyprotic acid
acid releases more than 1 hydrogen
EX:
H2SO4 (become H2O SO2)
H3PO4
H2CO3 (become H2O and CO2)
Oxidation
Increase in oxydation state, loss of electrons, charge more positive, reducting agent (species that reduces another, it itself is oxided)
reduction
A
derease in oxydation state, gain of electrons, charge more negative, oxidizing agent (species that oxides another, it itself is reduced)
Oxydation state
Elements are 0
monoatomic ion is the same as charge
fluorine is -1 in compounds
oxygen is usually -2 in compounds, exept peroxyde (o2 2-)
hydrogen is +1 in covalent compounds (withiout a metal) and -1 with metals binary compounds
Halogen is -1 in binary compounds, except whe with another halogen above it in the periodic table or with oxygen
