Chap 3: Short answer questions Flashcards
What does fMRI show?
Highly detailed 3D images of the brain’s structure that can track the flow of oxygen when a person is asked to perform mental tasks such as recalling a song title
What is the Barnum Effect
The phenomenon that occurs when individuals believe that personality descriptions apply specifically to them more than others
What structures did Wilder Graves Penfield map?
Primary somatosensory and primary cortices
What does a CT scan use?
X-ray technology
What is ONE advantage of using MRI
It produces highly detailed 3D images of the brain
What do PET scans do?
It tracks radioactive glucose that is injected into the patients to show which areas of the brain are active during mental processes
A corpus callostomy is when:
a patient has their corpus callosum severed to seperate the two hemisphere
Explain how PET are used
Positron emission tomography measures the volume and location of blood flow in the brain by tracking a radioactive substance such as glucose that has been injected into a person’s bloodsteam. PET scans show brain activity
Explain how MRI are used
Magnetic resonace imaging is neuroimaging technquies that involves harmless magnetic feilds and radio waves that prodcue computer-enhanced image of brain strucuture.
Explain how fMRI are used
Functional magnetic resonance imaging monoitors blood flows and oxygen consumption to reval areas of greater brain activity and function. fMRI prodcue high-resolution computer-enhanced 3D images of the brain to 1mm accuray
Explain how EGG are used
Electroencephalography is a device that detect, amplifies and records electrical activity in the brain in the form of brainwaves
Summarise the mind-versus-body debate
The mind-versus-body debate considers whether the mind is a seperate entitiy from the brain and body. The brain is physical and can be measured. Descates veiws the mind and body as two qutie distinct systems -dualism.
Compare monoism and daulism
Both monism and dualism are part of the mind-versus-body debate. Monoism is the view that the mind is the same thing as the brain whereas dualism is a term used to descibe the relationshio and conncetion between the body and the mind.
Identify two problems with Phrenology
- If you accpect this as fact you could alter your personality and functions by altering the bumps, lumps on your skull. which is false.
- Bumps, lumps and indentiation on the head change all the time
- During the early research of pheronolgy, they disregared anybody who had certain bumps that did not support their ideas
Differntiate between neuroimaging technquies and electrical brain stimulation
Neuroimaging technquies such as CT, PET, MRI and SPECT allow researchers to build on already extensive knowlegde of the brain and nervous system. They are used to treat, diagnose and understand the brain’s functionalitiy. Technquies like these make research the brain safer for individuals and allows scientists to link connections between physiological processes and behaviors. Ellectrical brain stimulation differs from neuroimaging because their dvices have been applied directly on brain tissue
