Chap 3: Brain investigations Flashcards
Thomas Wills
Thomas Wills had developed the terms ‘hemisphere’ and ‘lobe’ to discuss the brain. He determined automatic processes are controlled by specific areas
Claudius Galen
Claudius Galen was one of the first to study the brain in detail. He deduced the brain played an important role in sensation
Franz Joseph Gall
suggested that personality was directly linked to brain structures, and is noted for the development of phrenology
Phrenology
Is a pseudoscience that suggests our mental abilities and personality are controlled by 37 areas of the brain and that the shape and size of the skull can be measured to determin a person’s character
Neuroimaging technquies
- Position emssion temography (PET)
2. Magnetic resonace imaging (MRI)
Position emssion temography (PET) defintion
A technique that measures the volume and location of blood flow in the brain by tracking a radioactive substance (e.g. glucose) that has been injected into the person’s bloodstream
Magnetic resonace imaging (MRI) defintion
A neuroimaging procedure that uses harmless magaentic feilds and radio waves to produce a computer-enhanced image of the brain.
Electical brain stimulation and measurement
- Electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB)
2. Electroencephalograph (EGG)
Electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB) defintion
A technquie that sends mild electrical impluses through a probe to map brain
Electroencephalograph (EGG) defintion
A device that detects, amplifies and records elctrical activity in the brain in the form of brainwaves
