Definitions
Scientific Method
A standardized way of making observations, gathering data, testing hypothesis, and interpreting results to establish theories in order to describe and measure human behavior
Free will versus determinism
Is human behavior a result of ‘free will’, where a person makes a conscious decision to act out in a particular way? Or is it determinism, where actions are governed by both internal and external influences outside the person’s control.
Mind versus body problem
Is the mind a seperate entity from the physical body (dualism) or is it part of the same system (monolism)
Nature versus Nuture debate
Which has greater influence on a person’s mental processes and behaviour: heredity and genes or enviromental infleunces
Philosophy
A displice that trys to understand human behaviour by using logic and reason rather than observation and experimental research methods
Psychology
The systematic study of the mind (mental processes) and its behaviour
Three processes of psychology
- Gathering factual information
- Forming theories to explain these facts
- Testing these theories
Psychology is considered a science because….
Psychology is considered a science as it uses a systematic approach - known as the scieniftic method
Psychologists
Focus on understanding mental processes and behaviour to diagonse mental health issues and can draw on diverse array of assesment procedures and psychological tests to treat people, depending of their feild of specialism
Psychiatrists
focus on prescribing treatments based on the medical model (i.e medications) to help people- Qulaified doctor
Social Workers
focus on finding solutions to soical problems
