Chap 26: Acids And Bases Flashcards
3 Types of acid and examples
Citric acid-citrus fruit
Ethanoic acid-vinegar
Carbonic acid-fizzy drinks
Lab acids
Hydrochloric acid
Sulphuric acid
Hydrochloric acid
HCl
Sulphuric acid
H2SO4
Alkali
A base soluble in water
4 everyday examples of bases
Toothpaste
Soap
Bleach
Oven cooking
Lab bases
Sodium Hydroxide
Calcium hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide
NaOH
Calcium hydroxide
CAOH2
Indicator
A chemical that shows by means of color change whether a substance is an acid or a base
What happens to Litmus paper?
An acid turns blue litmus paper red and a base turns red litmus paper blue
Explain the pH scale
Goes from 0-14
Tells how strong or weak an acid or a base is
Neutral= pH 7
AcidpH7
Acid + Base=
Salt and water
Hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide=
Sodium chloride + water
HCL + NaOH = NaCl + H2O
NaCl + H2O
Everyday examples of neutralization
- Indigestion tablets are bases which neutralize excess stomach acid
- Lime is a base which neutralizes acid in soil
- Toothpaste is a base which neutralizes acid in the mouth
- wasp stings are basic, neutralized with vinegar and lemon juice
- Nettle, bee and ant stings are acidic, neutralized with toothpaste or baking soda
Neutralization experiment name
To titrate Hydrochloric acid (HCl) against sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and prepare a sample of sodium chloride (NaCl)
One characteristic of an acid
Sharp, sour taste
