Members of the department that respond to an incident involving a suspicious package , envelop or powder shall adhere to the following guidelines when PD not on scene :
- Immediately request pd response
- Transmit the appropriate 10-80 , specify suspected anthrax
3 a preliminary recon should be performed by FD resources to gather as much info as possible regarding the incident
4.if ambulatory have patients walk away from the area of exposure to another room or location that is isolated from other persons - If patient contact necessary ensure proper PPE is worn
- Shut down HVACS within incident location if necessary
7 limit number of responders in area to decrease the risk of exposure

- Make contact with pd incident commander to determine credibility
- Transmit appropriate 10-80 signal ,specify suspected anthrax
3 determine if life safety ops are necessary in progress or completed - Determine # of ppl needing Decon if any
- When patient contact necessary , ensure proper PPE is worn (consult with HAZ mat batt )
6 maintain open lines of communication with units of responding hazmat group for additional assistance
When the package in a unopened and there is no indication. Of hazard
The unit shall isolate area
When package is unopened and believed to present hazard the unit shall
Isolate the package
Move any persons believed to be contaminated to another isolated area
Evaluate potential life safety issues
Who will make decision in regard to Decon of Fdny or patients
Made by IC in consultation with hazmat batt and EMS HAZ tAC officer
When patient reports they were contaminated and they have visible powder or other substances on their skin or clothing member shall
- Ask patient to remove outer clothing if possible
- Provide patient with disposable garment or sheet
- Bag the clothing in clear plastic bag and leave with competent authority on scene
- Asses treat and transport the patient as appropriate
- Notify receiving hospital through EMD THAT they will receive a patient with possible exposure of contamination to unknown substance.
Patients who are critical or unstable should
Receive emergency Decon and be transported immediately
When patient has associated complaint and there is no immediate exposure
Asses treat and transport the patient as appropriate
Inform the competent authority as to the transport destination as necessary
Any patient on scene who is a symptomatic and not complaining of contamination
Requires no further assessment or treatment and may be deemed an uninjured occupant
