Chap 10 Sprinkler System Operations Flashcards
Automatic dry pipe sprinklers
Contain air or sometimes nitrogen in riser and piping at all times
Air is under pressure and this pressure maintains a “differential dry pipe valve “ in the closed position
Wet pipe automatic sprinklers
Contain water in riser and piping at all times
As soon as sprinkler head activates due to heat or fire , water is immediately discharged through the open head
Deluge sprinkler system
All nozzles or sprinkler heads when activated will flow simultaneously
Often found in aircraft hangers or where large quantities of flammable liquids are used
Pre-action sprinkler system
Consists of a fusible sprinkler heads , dry piping and a valve which is open upon electrical signal from smoke , heat or infrared (flame ) detector
Usually where sensitive electric equipment used
Combo
Sprinkler standpipe combo
May be dry or wet
Non-automatic sprinkler systems
Usually cellars or sub-cellars of older commercial buildings
Depend solely on FD to supply water
May contain fusible sprinkler heads, open sprinkler heads ,or perforated pipe
Green Siamese connection
Automatic
Red
Standpipe
Aluminum sprinkler Siamese
Non-automatic or perforated pipe
Sprinkler systems should always supplied with
3 1/2 hose
If a sprinkler building is not equipped with a standpipe the first line stretched is
Handline first
Second line augment sprinkler Siamese
Engine company officer should order the sprinkler system supplied/augmented when
Upon indication of a working fire ( smoke, heat visible flames or reports from employees or security guards )
or based on recon from ladder company personnel
Water flow alarms not necessarily a reason
Pu pressure for supplying sprinkler system should start a
150 psi
This pressure will have to be adjusted based on
1. Reports of sprinkler perform from ladder company personnel
2. If more than 2 lengths of 3 1/2 hose are needed to reach Siamese
3. For fires on upper floors
