CHAP 10 ORGANISMS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT Flashcards
what are producers?
an organism that makes it own food as it contains chlorophyll, that absorbs light to convert carbon dioxide & water into glucose through photosynthesis. Glucose is a chemical store of energy , oxygen is also released in the process.
what are consumers?
organisms that cannot make its own food, obtains nutrients and energy by feeding on other organisms.
what can consumers be classified as? [3]
primary consumer- organisms that feed on plants ONLY
secondary consumer- organisms that feed on PRIMARY consumers
tertiary consumer- organisms that feed on SECONDARY consumers
what are decomposers?
organisms that get their energy & nutrients by breaking down dead organisms, faeces and excretory products. -> their activity return nutrients like mineral salts to the environment. [ bacteria & fungi ]
define POPULATION
a group of organisms of the same species that live together in a habitat
define COMMUNITY
made up of all the populations of different species living & interacting with one another in a habitat [ living + non-living things]
define ECOSYSTEM
a community of organisms interacting with one another and with its non living environment
FOOD CHAIN
a series of organisms, beginning with the producer, through which energy and nutrients are transferred
