CHAP 1 CELLS Flashcards
define ‘cells’
• simplest structural & functional units of life
what role does mitochondria play in cells?
• provides energy for cell activities
what role does CHLOROPLASTS play in cells?
• carry out photosynthesis
what are the difference between light microscopes and electron microscopes?
LIGHT microscopes
• magnify objects up to 1000x
• coloured images
ELECTRON microscopes
• magnify objects to more than 200 000x
• black & white images , can be artificially colourised
cells consists of a mass living matter called ‘protoplasm’
what is protoplasm?
• jelly-like substance
• chemical activities which allows cell to survive & grow are carried out in the protoplasm
• CONSISTS OF (CCVN)
- cell membrane
- cytoplasm
- vacuole
- nucleus
what is cell membrane made up of?
lipids & proteins
what is cell wall made up of?
cellulose
what is 1 function of cell membrane?
• controls the movement of substances in & out of the cell ( partially permeable )
what are 4 functions of the cell wall?
• protects the cell from injury
• gives plant cell fixed shape
• fully permeable ( does not control type of substance that enters the cell )
• absent in animal cells
what role does ribosomes play in a cell?
• involved in the process of protein synthesis ( making proteins )
