Chap 10: Gases Flashcards
Used to measure atmospheric pressure and used to measure pressure of gases
- Barometer
- Mercury manometer
Dalton’s law
the pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of all component the gases
Deviations from ideal gas behavior
- Significant deviations occur at high pressures and low temp
- while min deviations occur when we have lowe pressure and high temp
Kinetic Molecular Theory and it’s properties
The average kinetic energy of the gas particles is directly proportional to absolute temperature (in K).
The collision is overall elastic that means that there’s transfer of energy but no loss of energy.
Any KE lost by one particle is completely gained by the other.
Not all particle are moving at the same speed, instead, there’s a distribution of speed.
Moles exert no forces on each other (no intermolecular or repulsive attractions), except during collisions.
Maxwell-Boltzman speed distribution
- At low temp molecules have narrow distribution and lower speeds
- at high temps, moles have broader distribution and higher speeds.
Mean Free Path and formula and it’s correlation with pressure.
The average distance molecules travel before collision.
As pressure increases, it decreases.
Mean Free Path = Av speed * Av time btn collision.
diffusion and effusion
The rates of effusion and diffusion is related to the root mean square.
Enrichment
Escaped gas is enriched with lighter gas molecules
Deviations from ideal gas behavior PV/nRT (1) occur
At high pressure and low temperatures. positive (>1) and negative deviation(<1)
